Nygh Internship 2018 awarded to Alexandra Kaye

The International Law Association (Australian Branch) is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2018 Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship is Alexandra Kaye.

The award was jointly presented to Ms Kaye by the International Law Association (Australian Branch) and the Australian Institute of International Affairs at a ceremony in Sydney shortly before Christmas. Ms Kaye commenced her internship with the Hague Conference on Private International Law in January 2018.

The Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship was established in memory of the late Hon Dr Peter Nygh AM, a leading international lawyer and former judge of the Family Court of Australia.

The annual award provides support for a post-graduate student or graduate to work with some the world’s leading private international law practitioners at the secretariat of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

ILA 2018 Conference – Registrations now open!

Registration for the 78th ILA Biennial Conference is now open.

The ILA 2018 Conference will be hosted by the International Law Association (Australian Branch) in Sydney, Australia
from 19 – 24 August 2018.

Scholarships are available to contribute towards the Conference registration fees, travel costs, accommodation, and subsistence. Scholarship applications are particularly welcomed from younger persons in regions of the world that are generally under-represented in the ILA’s work.

Event: Humanitarians under Fire and End-of-Year Function

The AGM of the International Law Association will be held at 5.00 pm on Thursday, 15 December 2016 at the offices of Marque Lawyers, Level 4, 343 George Street, Sydney NSW.

The AGM will be followed by an end of year function at 5:30 pm, which will feature a presentation by Patricia Garcia AO entitled ‘Humanitarians under Fire’.

Patricia Garcia AO is a highly respected humanitarian and human rights advocate, with experience in project design and delivery, campaigning and fundraising. For over 20 years Patricia has lived and worked in war zones. She has managed and coordinated humanitarian relief and development programs to assist refugees and IDPs in some of the world’s longest running conflicts, including Afghanistan, Sudan and Burma.

Patricia has worked for the United Nations and international NGOs, including Oxfam, Peace Winds Japan, German Agro Action, Norwegian Church Aid, UNHCR and UNOPS. In June 2016, Patricia was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia. Patricia is also a 2016 State Finalist for Australian of the Year.

The end of year function is open to both members and non‑members. Drinks and canapés will be provided. The cost of attendance is $10 (for members) and $20 (for non‑members).

The Law Council of Australia’s International Law Section will host a China Law breakfast on Wednesday 26 October at King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney. Upcoming Lecture with Justice Keane AC – “Courts and International Arbitration: A Reappraisal of Roles”

The International Law Association, Queensland Chapter warmly invites you to a breakfast lecture by Hon. Justice Patrick Keane AC of the High Court at 7:30 – 8:45 am on Friday 4 November 2016 in the Edinburgh Room, Brisbane Club. He will be speaking on the topic of “Courts and International Arbitration: A Reappraisal of Roles”.

Justice Keane was appointed to the High Court in March 2013. At the time of his appointment he was Chief Justice of the Federal Court of Australia. He served as a judge of the Court of Appeal, Supreme Court of Queensland from 2005-2010 before joining the Federal Court. He is a graduate of the University of Queensland and Oxford University. He was admitted to the Queensland Bar in 1977 and in 1988 he was appointed Queen’s Counsel. He was Solicitor-General for Queensland from 1992 to 2005. Justice Keane AC was appointed a Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2015.

CPD POINTS: Solicitors may wish to claim 1 general CPD unit, and Barristers may wish to claim 1 CPD point in the Substantive Law category. You will be able to record your attendance by signing an attendance register.

Speakers: Professor Richard Garnett and Mr Andrew Walter

Professor Richard Garnett is professor of law at the University of Melbourne and a consultant to Herbert Smith Freehills.   Andrew Walter is Assistant Secretary, Civil Law Unit, Australian Attorney General’s Department. They are both members of the Australian Government Delegation of Experts to the Hague Conference on Private International Law (Jurisdiction and Judgments Convention).

Professor Garnett and Mr Walter will speak about the draft Hague Convention on Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments (the Draft Judgments Convention) and the Hague Convention on Choice of Court Agreements (the Choice of Courts Convention). The Draft Judgments Convention was presented to first special commission on the convention in the Hague in June 2016. The Choice of Court Convention entered into force on 1 October 2015 following approval by the European Union and the Australian Government is considering ratification of the convention. It aims to ensure that choice of court agreements between parties to international commercial transactions are effective.

The seminar will be held in Melbourne with a video link to Sydney. It is directed to practitioners and law students, who would like to learn more about developments which aim to increase the effectiveness of transnational litigation. It will also provide an opportunity for potential applicants for the Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship to learn more about the work of the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

The Peter Nygh Hague Conference Internship is awarded each year to a graduate or post graduate student of an Australian law school by the ILA (AB) and the Australian Institute of International Affairs. In 2017 the 12th Peter Nygh Hague Conference Intern will travel to the Hague to undertake a 6 month internship with the Hague Conference on Private International Law.

The Editors of the ILA Reporter are pleased to alert readers to the following call for papers issued by the Melbourne Journal of International Law:

The Editors of the Melbourne Journal of International Law, Australia’s premier generalist international law journal, are now inviting submissions for volume 17(2). This issue will have a special focus on the legal implications of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, and space will also be available for articles on other issues of international law.
